All EFCSW churches are encouraged to establish Exemption by either (1) Requesting to be part of EFCSW’s IRS Group Exemption (download sample letter and send to the Equipping Center in Yorba Linda for approval) or (2) To file a Form 1023 with the Internal Revenue Service to establish their tax exempt status.
Although these steps are not required, if a church does not establish its exempt status with the IRS, then it will be up to each contributor, when audited, to prove that he/she gave to an exempt organization. Needless to say, most major contributors are not interested in doing this and will require that the exempt determination be established before making a major gift to a church.

Exemption Independent of EFCSW
To establish exemption independently of EFCSW, you will need to file articles of incorporation with the Secretary of State, and complete the 501(c)(3) documents for approval by the IRS. It is recommended that you work with a corporate attorney in this process. If you have questions, contact the EFCSW office.
